Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is proud to announce its most impactful grant distribution yet. In a year marked by unprecedented challenges, CAF fully funded all qualified 2021 grant applications for athletes with physical disabilities, helping them reclaim their athletic journeys through sport.
In 2021, CAF awarded 3,038 grants totaling $5.1 million, supporting athletes from first-time applicants to Paralympians. As a global leader in adaptive sports funding, CAF continues to change lives by providing access to sports equipment, coaching, competition travel, and mentorship for individuals with permanent physical disabilities.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional training and competition worldwide. Despite these hurdles, CAF adapted by supporting over 400 athletes who deferred their 2020 grants to 2021, understanding that many competitions were canceled or postponed. These grants ensured athletes could continue their journeys once restrictions eased.
“Our belief in the power of sport to strengthen from the inside out is deeper than ever,” said Virginia Tinley, CAF Chief Executive Director. “Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, many of these grants provide critical support for coping with the impact of the pandemic.”
More than half of Team USA’s Paralympic athletes at Tokyo 2021 were past CAF grant recipients, showcasing the vital role CAF plays in preparing athletes for the world’s biggest stages. For the first time, NBC aired Paralympics coverage in prime time, spotlighting the incredible talent CAF supports.
CAF’s 2021 grants spanned 94 sports and activities including:
CAF’s partnership with GRIT Freedom Chairs expanded access to all-terrain wheelchairs, granting 80 custom chairs for adventurous athletes, including 15 youth recipients. These chairs empower users to embrace outdoor activities with independence and confidence.
For 25 years, Össur has donated hundreds of advanced prosthetic feet and knees to CAF athletes. In 2021, 81 Össur prostheses were granted, helping athletes pursue their mobility and fitness goals. Tabi King, Össur’s Director of Marketing, shared:
“Together CAF and Össur ensure individuals with limb loss and limb difference can unleash their athletic potential with critical access to innovative sports prostheses, expert coaching, and instruction.”
CAF’s High School Adaptive Sports Program supports student athletes preparing for school teams, with 100 participants training virtually in 2021. Other initiatives like Operation Rebound provide injured military veterans and first responders with equipment and community support to live their best athletic lives.
In 2021, CAF grants impacted athletes in 49 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and 52 countries, covering diverse adaptive sports needs. With limited insurance coverage for adaptive equipment and few alternatives available, these grants make sport participation possible for thousands.
