Mike Box is the mind behind Box Wheelchairs. His journey began when his brother was injured in a motorcycle accident at 17. After struggling to get adjustments made to his tennis wheelchair, they took the initiative to modify it themselves. Mike left his aerospace career in 1992 to launch his first wheelchair company.
By 2010, after selling that business, Mike returned to his roots—working from his garage with a renewed focus on customer well-being rather than industry pressures. Out of this commitment, Box Wheelchairs was founded.
Box Wheelchairs has been at the forefront of innovation, turning bold ideas into real opportunities for athletes. One pivotal moment came when Paralympic wheelchair rugby player and coach Troy McGuirk asked Mike to design a chair for skateparks. Though Mike initially dismissed the idea, the challenge sparked the creation of Wheelchair Motocross (WCMX).
Today, WCMX is one of the fastest-growing adaptive sports, complete with its own World Championships and international community. Box Wheelchairs has been a driving force behind this movement, giving athletes equipment that builds confidence, expresses individuality, and expands what’s possible.
With vibrant color schemes, minimalist yet strong designs, and custom builds, Box Wheelchairs has redefined how people view mobility—transforming wheelchairs into tools of empowerment.
At the heart of Box Wheelchairs is a philosophy of listening first, building second. Each frame is designed and fabricated from scratch, using the highest quality components on the market. The team works closely with every customer to understand their goals and challenges, ensuring the final product is both functional and personal.
No two chairs are alike. Each reflects the unique personality and needs of the athlete who uses it, setting Box apart in the industry.
“WCMX has been a great outlet in my life. It brings a lot of joy to me, and I feel like WCMX is a great way for kids and adults to see their wheelchair as more of a gift!”
— Aaron Fotheringham, Team Box, Nitro Circus, WCMX athlete
“My interest in WCMX came from seeing a video of Aaron Fotheringham doing a backflip on his wheelchair. I was in the hospital at the time and thought that was the coolest thing ever. So once I healed up, I began to practice. And now it’s a part of my life that I can’t live without. I love it! WCMX has taken me places I’ve never even thought I’d go.”
— Jerry Diaz, Team Box, WCMX athlete
